Republican women clubs began to form in the early 1900s, following a concerted effort on the part of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Mrs. J. Ellen Foster, the first woman to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court, visited the Western part of the country at the request of the RNC Chairman. She talked to women about getting involved in Republican politics. Momentum continued throughout the Western Region eventually making it’s way to Hawaii.

The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) was founded in Chicago in 1938. The Hawaii Federation of Republican Women (HFRW) was founded in 2015. Fern Mossman of Kailua and Mary Smart along with Rita Kama-Kimura from Mililani are founding members. It is worth noting that a club led by Bonnie Wharton existed prior to HFRW becoming federated in 2015. Republican Women are proudly well-represented in the Aloha State of Hawaii and our membership has grown exponentially in 2024 with well over 100 members.

The HFRW currently has 6 clubs representing the Hawaiian Islands.
